I spent quite some time picking out my next headphone upgrade, and I am glad I chose these. While the impedance is quite high and will require an amp, It is well worth it. The quality sounds wonderful, I can hear so much detail now that I couldn't ever before. The low ends sound wonderful through these headphones, entirely due to the open-back design. Unfortunately, that same open-back design can lead to sound bleeding into and out of the headphones. If you are in a loud environment, it will dampen your enjoyment of these headphones. But otherwise, these are a fantastic choice for quality feeling and sounding headphones.
SPECIFIC USE CASES:
I used these headphones for a variety of things, as I do a variety of things. The uses I assume most people are curious about are Gaming, Music Production/Listening, and Movies/TV/Videos. These headphones are perfect for any sort of music production or listening experience. The frequencies haven't been boosted or lowered on any end, allowing you to experience the music as it was meant to be experienced. You can truly hear details you might never have heard before in your songs, I still find new details in the music I listen to!
As for gaming use, these headphones can be quite good, but may not necessarily be what you want. The sound stage and level of detail are incredibly helpful for more competitive games that require the listening of footsteps or far-away noises. If you aren't playing something competitive, I wouldn't suggest these, unless of course, you want that detail.
For movies, and all other forms of video, these headphones are pretty killer. While personally, I believe a nice surround system is better for watching a video, these get somewhat close. What I like about speakers is that they play the sound into the room, while on-ear headphones play the sound in your ear. Having the sound play in your ear can feel less authentic, while speakers can really immerse you into the video. But, that only goes for on-ear closed-back headphones. These headphones are neither. They are over-ear and open-backs. The over-ear helps remove that feeling of the sound playing in your ear, and more like it's playing around it. In addition to that, the open-back design helps the sound escape and gives it a more speaker-like quality of it playing in the room.
Equipment:
- FiiO E12 amplifier
- Behringer UCA222 DAC
- ViPER4Windows audio software
Comfort: You'll have to try them on to really appreciate their comfort. The revviews say there is a heavy clamping force but I beg to differ...it's quite low and enough to the point where it stays on your head and is hardly noticeable. The earpads are very soft and have a ridonkulous amount of cushion to them, they're like pillows and they engulf my ears which is nice. 11/10, far more comfortable than my electrowaves with DT770EVB earpads.
Sound:
Bass - Not as strong as open cans, and not nearly as strong as all of the reviews claim...but still strong for open cans. These do have bass, don't get me wrong...but not basshead pleasing without EQing and adjusting other bass related settings. Once everything is adjusted properly, it can provide some nice bass, but it still lacks a bit in quantity. The quality is quite good though, although like one review I came across said, it does sacrifice quantity for quality. It was a bit difficult finding the right settings, but I will definitely post a picture of those below for insight. I also did find the right driver to rattle, it is probably a hair, but it has not gone away yet...will have to figure out how to fix that. 9/10
Mids - I am not too concerned about the mids, and haven't had cans that are good with mids...so I cannot say much here. I will say, and take this with a grain of salt considering my situation, that the vocals of songs were stunning. I haven't heard vocals like that from anything and am very impressed. Some said that the mids were a bit recessed...I would agree if the bass is set high enough, it can definitely overpower the mids if that is the case. I would disagree when it comes to the vocals though, they were right up front regardless of the bass. 9/10
Highs - The supposed killing factor for most...I say that's pure bollocks. I am treble sensitive, I don't like piercing notes as they give me a headache. When I first put these on, I did so with an amp and that's it. I can see why people say it can be a bit much, but it's nothing to be concerned about. I did get a little bit of fatigue from the treble, but people are over exaggerating. I found the treble to ever so slightly sibilant, but nothing major. 8.5/10
Leak - These are open cans, expect them to let in sound, and let out sound. I can hear my TV quite well, with these on as I type. While it is a tiny bit muffled, it's still very much audible and it's of acceptable volume. As for sound going out, these do leak more than you would expect, so be prepared for that. If you have your EQ/software settings set to a more dark sound it will not leak as much, but them mids and highs are going to be heard loud and clear. 6/10
Imaging - Not quite sure what this is, but following the definition I would say these do that quite well. Cannot say much else, but reproduction does seem to be good. I don't know if this fits here or not, but poorly recorded songs or songs with poor quality will definitely suffer in all sections. I won't rate this.
Soundstage - This is what impressed me the most. I was frequently surprised at hearing an instrument or sound I never knew was there in quite a few songs. The soundstage is much wider than I expected, and throughly impressed me. 10/10
Build quality: I would tent to agree with the others on this. Everything is good...it's German made, so it not a surprise. I really don't need to add to this as others have already said what I'd say. 9/10
Design: I'll keep it short and sweet since this isn't really relevant. It's nice, but I definitely prefer the premium look. Plastic doesn't appeal to me, but it is designed well. I won't rate this.
Overall I'd say this would earn an 8.5/10. It could do better in aspects, but it is quite well. If "audiophile basshead" fits you, then this will likely appeal to you, if you lean more towards a heavier basshead it likely won't. I for one am happy with it...can't wait to hear how it sounds at 100 hours. It could use a bit more bass though.
I will update when the 100 hour burn in is complete. I have about 4-5 hours under the belt, but due to the rattling issue I am likely going to RMA so I will have to start over again.
The sound quality is outstanding. The clarity and detail are exceptional, making it easy to pick out nuances in the music that I hadn't noticed before. The open-back design is a significant advantage, as it relieves the pressure that often comes with closed-back headphones, allowing for extended listening sessions without discomfort.
I had heard some concerns about the highs being too pronounced in the EQ, but honestly, I haven't found this to be a problem. The highs are crisp and clear without being harsh or fatiguing. The overall balance of the sound spectrum is very pleasing, and the bass is tight and well-defined without being overpowering.
In terms of comfort, these headphones are top-notch. The over-ear design and plush ear pads make them very comfortable to wear for long periods. The headband is adjustable and fits securely without being too tight.
Pros:
Exceptional sound clarity and detail
Comfortable for extended use
Open-back design reduces pressure
Well-balanced sound with crisp highs and tight bass
Cons:
None that I've experienced
Overall, the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro headphones offer fantastic sound quality and comfort. They are an excellent choice for anyone looking for high-quality studio monitor headphones. Highly recommended!

The first set I bought was the OneOdio unit, but I found the bass too overwhelming ( it is a closed back set - since the events described below, I have stuck chair-coasters on the cans so they cannot close completely on my head, but it is very uncomfortable).
Consulting with various people who should know, I was directed to the Sony MDR-7506 Professional Studio Headphones. I eagerly bought those. I could not handle my own excitement when these highly lauded headphones arrived. I shoved them on my head, but the sound they emitted was truly ghastly. It seemed to consist of overwhelming bass and a screeching treble peak at 2.5kHz, and little else. They made my delicate acoustic guitar sound like a Fender Telecaster on its bridge pickup. My great anticipation turned to disappointment, and my disappointment turned into anger and then into sheer hatred.
I went off to the local music store and came home with an AKG-72 headset. It was better-sounding than the much more expensive Sony set, but the bass was still unnaturally high. I think teenage girlies like it like that.
I then searched for my old Duck-taped Plantronics set on Amazon and found it (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B001KUSXXU), but it had been discontinued. However, the first line of its description made a point of stating "Open-ear design keeps you connected to the game and your surroundings". Apparently the key to my misery was that I needed "Open-ear" (open back) headphones. I do a lot of online jamming, and for that one needs to be able to both listen AND sing. With the Sony set, any attempt to sing while wearing those headphones was ridiculous. It was like trying to sing with a serious head cold and one's fingers stuck in one's ears. It was simply A-W-F-U-L. One's voice droned in one's head to the exclusion of all else.
When I took the AKG set back, the shop gave me a Beyer-Dynamic DT-990 250 Ohm open back set and told me to take that PLUS the AKG home and to try them and see what I conclude. The Beyer-Dynamic DT-990 was obviously the solution. HOWEVER, its 250 Ohm impedance was a bit much for my little interface I was using for online jamming.
But, lo and behold, when I took a look on Amazon, I found that Beyer-Dynamic were offering an 80 Ohm unit of the "same" DT-990. I immediately ordered this device and took back the AKG and the 250 Ohm headphone sets to the music shop. They could not provide the 80 Ohm device, otherwise I would have bought it from them.
I am now the proud owner of a lovely German-designed 80 Ohm Beyer-Dynamic DT-990 headphone set manufactured in Germany. The sound through it is quite natural, and when I wear it AND sing, there is no sensation of "fingers in the ear" or "head cold". The overwhelming bass is gone and in its place is a well-tempered bass balance. The inhuman screeching treble of the Sony is nowhere in sight. In fact, that 2.5kHz response of the BT-990 is MANY decibels lower than the Sony and vastly better matched to the natural human hearing system.
These are the headphones for folks who are prepared to spend at least around $200 for a decent set of headphones. Folks with hearing loss at 2.5kHz may well wish to consider the Sony set. Those are telephone frequencies. For my part, I can now jam online again and sing as I do so. All this without getting frustrated out of my skull as with the Sony set. Over and above all this, the DT-990s are very comfortable and one can wear them all evening and not notice it after a while.
All the comparisons I made above were done using a Mackie 1202-VLZPRO mixer, which has three equalizer controls at 12kHz, 2.5 kHz and 80 kHz respectively. With the Sony set, I had to crank the 2.5kHz control almost all the way around anti-clockwise to get the response at that frequency to anywhere near reasonable.
Il est confortable et je pense que ma tête tiendra les longues sessions.
