It looked so much better before he added the makeup

u/tipsea-69 avatar

The outline minimalism was just perfect. Then he turned it into a fake wood animal cast out of gypsum.

u/topiast avatar

The washed out unpainted look really does not appeal to me but to each their own. Looks unpainted. My grandparents had a 20 foot indian totem statue carved and the sculptor burnt edges and stained it in certain areas. Color really adds so much dimension. But, I think this paint job was a big fail. The highlights are weird and unnatural looking.

u/VeinySausages avatar

Give him a break. He did this all in less than a minute.

He also did a very good job I don't understand why people need to criticize him...He created a wooden Fox

He made a very cute fox out of the trunk... and the fox is very beautiful to look at.... i'm sure painted or not it could be decide but I think it's protects the wood ... I don't know why I feel like we are criticizing an artist when he do a pretty nice work please explain what's the point of that?

u/tipsea-69 avatar

I mean...why not? It is just a basic human response. To like or not. To criticize or not. People's tastes vary, aesthetics different. That makes us human. r/ATBGE will give a little perspective of this human condition.

This wood work doesn't belong to that sub, it is a decent job, nicely executed, but the effort is not worth the end result (for me). 😊

hmmm .. but thanks( it bugs me but that's me) I find it cool you answered ❤️👍

Beautiful fox, I love all the carving. I just wish he didn't paint it. It really doesn't need the white paint.

That is the cutest things in the Fox when they have that white color for real but I'm sure it will wear off in time and in a mean while no bugs go into the Wood...lol let the artist to the deside...

That's the worst looking bear I've ever seen.

I love and want that fox statue! It's so good!

u/ballistics211 avatar

I'd imagine you can buy it for at least 3k

Probably true and they definitely deserve it, but I couldn't afford it. Maybe someday I'll be able to afford something like that! 🦊❤️

We all await 'someday'

Marks also a second generation carver. His Father Don Colp is a pioneer of the carving world.

Ooh a squirrel! I mean a wolf? I mean a bear?! I mean a wolf!!! Oooh it’s a fox

Love it! 👏

u/Maleficent-Sale-3165 avatar

Beautiful work 👍🏼

Having run a chainsaw for hundreds of hours I can really appreciate this man's skill and I also can't watch when he sticks the tip of the bar into a pocket and leans in to get a close look at his work. Yikes. Amazing bar control.

u/finemustard avatar

Yeah, this guy 100% needs to be wearing a hardhat to save his face from kickbacks. I know he's using a low-kickback dime-nose bar but when you're intentionally putting your face right next to the bar like that while working with the nose you're kinda asking for it.

I don't mean to take anything away from a man who clearly knows his tool and his craft but that just isn't for me. Imagine hitting a nail, bullet, knot.

Better without color, but great job.

Chainsaw Artist sounds so badass

The color ruined it :(

Truly incredible... but what's with that audio at the end? Fly fishing, fishing, fishing gear?

Real chainsaw man 💪

u/Clitgore avatar

He sculpts like Thomas Kinkade paints...

Not really bending though is it ....

Lundy Cupp from Tennessee is better.

Making not one, but seven fox! Lol 😂

That's a beefy ass fox.

Spent the whole video trying to guess if it was a dog, a bear, or a raccoon. Guess I was outfoxed

. I love it I wish you come to my place and do one for me also... fresh paint protects the wood , it would last longer and once it's wear down a little bit ...to me it's even look better it became like Antic...I love the looks I love the work and it's fantastic how it being done❤️

u/Socksmaster avatar

can you imagine being his neighbor...

u/CarmelSaltedNutsack avatar

Pffff the last…… I bend wood the second I know my girl is gonna be out of the house for more then 20 minutes.

u/Justabuttonpusher avatar

He work down his chainsaw… did you see how little it got toward the end?

This video made me UNREASONABLY horny.

For him, not the sculpture.

Subtractive art is so hard to do i have mad respect for anyone who can do it

u/Vuxdee avatar

This is amazing!

Amazing!

I thought it was a Shiba Inu at first

u/Evening-Class1081 avatar

This isn’t really next level. I mean, it’s just a two step process:

  1. get a big block of wood

  2. cut away everything that doesn’t look like a fox

Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!

I worked on a multi million dollar home renovation years ago. When they were clearing the lot they left some really tall stumps all over the property. The owner hired a member of the Stihl professional chain saw carving team to carve bears and eagles and squirrels in the stumps. Every day there were around 20 people on site - carpenters, landscapers, electricians and plumbers. Everyone would stop what they were doing to go watch this guy work. He pulled up with a 2 car box trailer filled to the teeth with chainsaws. It was really amazing watching these stumps turned into an 8’ tall statue.

I Love it!

No mask I’d be dead

What’s that show that is about woodworkers or woodcutters?

So much talent

I need 2!

u/ttv_omnimouse avatar

Hahahaha it's a giraffe

I love this. In Aledo Illinois at the hardware store they would do this to advertise their still chainsaws and equipment. I love it

I love comments on old posts like this haha

Especially when the post is a great post. lol 😂

u/Several-Front-7898 avatar

Idk what everyone's talking about he probably added stain for the red and paint for the white. I really like the way this turned out, and I really like how he used the burning technique to give it the dark outline it needed. Everyone has preferences but stop saying "it would've looked better if" that's a matter of opinion yall

u/Groundbreaking-Pin46 avatar

No 😷

u/praisetheboognish avatar

Don't care how experienced you are that was the dumbest fucking engine start up I've ever seen.

Why? For the people too scared to touch a chainsaw

u/praisetheboognish avatar

He started it one handed while the bar was laying on the wood. It's careless and can result in an accidental injury.

There are two ways to properly start a chainsaw, one way is placing the saw on the ground, putting your foot through the trigger handle while your other hand is on the top handle and starting it. The second way is wedging the saw between your legs and holding the top handle and starting it. If I ever saw someone working with me doing that they'd be stopped immediately and taken to rake up leaves or some shit. Same goes for drop starting.

u/BerkshireMtnSculptor avatar
Edited

Wedging the saw between your legs?? WTF? Marks started more saws in his 40+ years of carving than most humans. I’ve never in my life seen someone stick it between their legs!! Drop starting is the way. Comfort levels. You must be from the UK. Only place on Earth at competitions they make you try to stick your foot in the handle and bend over to start it. (Not that it’s “wrong”)

u/finemustard avatar

You've never seen someone use the leg-lock method of starting a saw? This is pretty much the modern industry standard. I know lots of guys, especially old-timers and people who are improperly trained, still use a drop start but that doesn't make it safe.

Ah thanks for the knowledge. I’ve always been too scared to cut myself to use one and just do a hand saw. Not like I have to cut down huge trees around my house anyway

u/praisetheboognish avatar

As long as you respect the equipment you're using and understand how to properly make cuts and avoid kickback there's nothing to be scared of but I understand. I've been a Stihl tech since I was a teenager and run equipment nearly every day so it's just a natural reaction for me to correct people. It's usually the old guys who have lost respect for the equipment that they use who end up losing limbs and fingers.

u/finemustard avatar

Yup, pretty stupid way to start a saw. Sure, the leg-lock method doesn't look cool but you'll never hurt yourself or someone else by using it. Anyone who's taken a chainsaw safety course in the last 30 years (at least) should know the two options for starting that you described are the only two approved ways of starting a saw safely.

That is how timber cutters have done it for decades.

u/praisetheboognish avatar

Just because some people do something a certain way for a long period of time doesn't mean it's the right way to do something. I promise you not all chainsaw operators do this, mainly just the ones who end up losing fingers or limbs.

u/uncledungus avatar

Not sure why you’re being downvoted that’s a ridiculously dangerous way of starting a fucking motor sword

But but but.. cool fox right?

u/praisetheboognish avatar

The carving is dope for sure he's crazy talented. I've just started my first carving actually and it's extremely hard to do all the details.
