Lyrics
-------------------
English translation
-----------------------
They are restless without any reason.
Every branch is swaying, the new leaves are fluttering in the breeze,
The scintillating light is spreading everywhere,
As they romp around in all directions.
In murmuring tones, they rejuvenate themselves in youthful exuberance.
They listen intently to the silent whispers of the sky,
The words of the azure expanse,
They carry the life force, that flows unceasingly,
They are the eternal flame of the ever-meditative earth.

Anecdote on the song
----------------------------
Ora okarone chanchal is the 12th song of the first part of Navin, a musical play that Rabindranath Tagore wrote in March 1931. Titled Basanta, this play was performed in Calcutta’s New Empire theatre the following month. Prior to that, it was performed in Santiniketan on the occasion of Basanta Utsav. The next year, this song was published with several amendment.
Roma Chakraborty, in her memoirs entitled Navin: Smriti, recounts that this song was written by Tagore specifically for his adopted granddaughter Nandini or Pupe. She wrote: “Little Pupe had danced to this song. We all knew that Gurudev had written this song with her in mind. She danced with such lively expressiveness, it is difficult to put into words.”
In Ora akarone chanchal , Tagore immediately draws the listeners into the world of nature's boundless energy and movement. The use of vivid imagery, such as branches swaying and new leaves fluttering in the breeze, effectively paints a picture of the natural world in constant motion, resonating with the audience and evoking a sense of wonder.
This song masterfully captures the awe-inspiring beauty and dynamism of nature, enveloping listeners in its enchanting imagery and poetic expressions. It fosters a sense of reverence for the earth's living spirit and encourages reflection on one’s place amid the vastness of the universe.
