TERMINOLOGY TUESDAY 🌿
w/ the Florida Native Plant Society!
In our last episode, we discussed how humans rely on the Ecosystem Services provided by functioning ecosystems. Our very existence and the necessities required for our everyday survival are provided by these services that we mostly take for granted.
We generally categorize ecosystem services into four groups, and today we will describe the first of those groups;
Provisioning Services:
These are products obtained from ecosystems that we use. Including;
Foods:
Plant foods like vegetables, fruits, herbs, spices, as well animals we eat; wild game, livestock, fish, birds, seafood, etc.
Water: self explanatory

Plant foods like vegetables, fruits, herbs, spices, as well animals we eat; wild game, livestock, fish, birds, seafood, etc.
Water: self explanatory
Fuels:
Oils, natural gas, biomass fuels, hydroelectric power etc.
Raw Materials:
Timber, organic matter and fertilizer, animal products like wool, and plants we use like cotton, hemp, flax, etc.
Medicinal resources:
Pharmaceuticals are often sourced from plants or animals, or are synthesized based on these chemical models.
This is by no means a comprehensive list of provisioning services, but it is an overview to begin comprehending the ways we, as humans, depend on functioning ecosystems.
Next week, we will continue reviewing the other categories of ecosystem services.
The Florida Native Plant Society helps to advocate for and conserve Florida’s biodiversity, and we are currently fundraising for our Annual Campaign. If you have the means to support our work, please check our FNPS.org to donate!
Thanks for tuning in! 👋🏻
