| Video Discription | Primary Current Injection is routinely used for testing protective devices in low voltage applications, such as low voltage AC circuit breakers, oil reclosers, and high-speed DC circuit breakers. It is the only technique available to verify the condition and functionality of these devices to ensure they perform as expected. The test methods, techniques and equipment used to test these devices varies based on several different factors, such as current waveform, size or design. Primary injection is often very time consuming, and since most test instruments still follow a traditional design, testing usually requires skilled personnel who understand the testing techniques, the attributes of the device under test, and how to operate the test instrument. Common problems in the field include trip settings selection, heating effects on the test object causing erroneous trip times, and improper test methods. Additionally, time current curve availability and identification, evaluating test results and creating a test report are tedious time-consuming tasks. This presentation will discuss how advanced methods and techniques overcome these challenges to facilitate quick and efficient primary current injection testing. Automated testing processes, digital user-interactive interface and new developments contribute to addressing the above-mentioned challenges. We will also cover recommendations regarding procedural challenges such as available input power, the effect it has on desired output current and testing high impedance test devices. |
