After spending six unforgettable weeks in 2018 exploring some of the largest cities in India, I wanted a change of pace for my next trip to the country. I set off for the small towns, valleys, mountains, and national parks of northeast India in March of 2019. What I found in the states of Assam and Meghalaya blew my mind and redefined what I thought India could be. It’s such a beautiful place and I’m so glad I get to share it with you guys!

When I arrived in Shillong, I checked into my Mizo guest house at the Soram Villa Homestay, a three-story building just 10 minutes away from Police Bazaar. The homestay has five rooms and a cottage, as well as a rooftop hut where you can eat meals. It’s located right across from St. Anthony’s College. Let’s go explore the property!
Outside the hut on the roof, you can get a nice view of St. Anthony’s College. There are lots of potted plants on the landing as you head downstairs from the roof. I headed down to level 2, where my unit was. There’s a beautiful terrace on the level where you can relax or work. The homestay has WiFi, which is super important to me when I travel! I love this place. The owner is super nice!
Inside, my unit is basically a studio apartment. There’s a closet with towels and space to hang up your clothes right inside the door. There’s a clothing rack just inside the door, as well as a folding table.
My bedroom had two twin beds in it. I slept with an extra blanket because the nights get really chilly in Shillong! There’s also a nice TV and a station where I charge all of my equipment.
The bathroom is really nice and super clean. It has marble walls. Like most places in India, the bathroom has a water heater, which you must turn on if you want to take a hot shower. You can bathe yourself with the buckets provided or use the overhead shower head. There’s also a toilet and a nice sink with shelving underneath.
On the wall outside the bathroom are photos from around Meghalaya. And that’s my unit!
When you leave your unit here, always remember to lock up, so reapply the padlock and the door locks. Always be safe!
Downstairs from my unit is a carport. Along the terrace are lots of plants. They really made this place feel cozy and homey. This homestay is basically one large house that they converted into a guesthouse.
Downstairs, you can also see the Assam-type cottage. It’s very old and has a kitchen and multiple rooms in it. On my way there, I met up with the owner, Josephine, who invited me inside.
Inside the cottage is a very nice living room with 12-foot-high ceilings and a super chill seating area and TV. There’s a nice, spacious bedroom two large beds, shelves with extra blankets, a heater, and a little table.
The bathroom consists of two rooms – a smaller area with a mirror and a very nice, tile bathroom with a shower, water heater, toilet, and sink.
The kitchen is huge! There’s a massive dining table, lots of counter space, a microwave, a stovetop, a refrigerator, and space for cups, pans, and utensils.
There’s also a master bedroom, which has a king-sized bed and high ceilings. There’s a smaller bed as well. Off the master bedroom is a double bathroom with racks for towels, a mirror, and another bathroom with a toilet, shower, sink, and water heater.
This place is incredible. If you ever come to Meghalaya, I highly recommend staying here during your time in Shillong. You should probably stay 4-7 nights in order to see Meghalaya properly. The people are wonderful and friendly and have features that are more southeast Asian than Indian. The roads wind throughout the mountains, so it takes time to get around.
While you’re in Shillong, visit Police Bazaar for breakfast and dinner and Iewduh Market to browse and shop. You’ll also want to take a trip down to Sohra to see the waterfalls and living root bridges around Cherrapunjee. They’re gorgeous!
I hope you had fun coming along with me on my Soram Villa Homestay tour! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!
