| Video Discription | It is not every day that a person is acutely faced with their mortality. Those who are given the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer find themselves in this situation. It is not uncommon to have the necessary tools in one's toolbox for the journey with pancreatic cancer. The statistics for five year survival are daunting. At the UCLA Center for Pancreatic Disease, even with our five year survival rate of 34% for those patients that have a pancreatic resection and adjuvant chemotherapy, the survival statistic is concerning. There are some tools, strategies and supports that when employed can and will help the patient, family and significant others on this journey with pancreatic cancer. Many patients feel as if they have been "punched in the stomach" upon diagnosis. Because of this feeling of loss of control, it is essential that the patient gain some sense of control. This can be accomplished by advocacy. Either the patient as his/her own advocate, or identifying someone who is willing to be the patient's advocate. As part of this advocacy, there are a few strategies that will benefit the patient as he or she goes from diagnosis, to treatment, to recovery and survivorship and in some cases palliative/hospice care. Diligent record keeping is essential on this journey. Since this is about the patient, keeping an organized binder with all of your medical records allows you to present yourself for second opinions without too much effort and ease the task of coordination and continuity of care. It also gives the patient a sense of control within the context of his or her medical care. The Hirshberg Foundation offers such a binder, The Bellah Care Chronicles, and can be requested by calling into the office. Community Resources such as the Simms/Mann Center, American Cancer Society, the Hirshberg Foundation, and Cancer Support Community are excellent in providing a wide array of support from individual and family counseling, financial assistance, nutritional counseling, and networking with other pancreatic cancer patients. Often the initial feeling of being alone is assuaged once a patient discovers these community resources. Although the journey of pancreatic cancer can have many hoops to jump through, the journey is made easier with the available resources and support systems that you can add to your toolbox. |
