| Video Discription | Palm oil is one of the world's most widely produced vegetable oils. Its production leaves behind huge amounts of wastewater and plant refuse. That leads to emissions of the potent greenhouse gas methane - corresponding to the energy yield of 750 millions liters of diesel fuel. The Federal Agricultural Research Centre in Germany has joined forces with an engineering firm in Bremen and the Indonesian Oil Palm Research Institute to develop what is called "zero-waste" technology. They turn part of the plant waste into compost. The rest is used for environmentally benign energy production. Of some 500 palm oil mills in Malaysia and Indonesia, nine have been equipped with the new technology. More facilities are under construction or in the planning stages. Report by: Hagen Tober |
