Sure there were plenty of other science-fiction series in the decades leading up to its premiere in 1966, but none had managed to blend the sociopolitical themes with the sci-fi backdrop in such a masterfully executed kind of way. Despite its originality, superb casting, and impeccable writing, Star Trek: The Original Series suffered from a pretty dismal reality. The show couldn't pull in viewers in its early days. The show had begun to amass a dedicated fan base but the small number of early Trekkies wasn't enough to save the show from its inevitable demise. NBC didn't like the numbers it was seeing. Star Trek was placing third in its time slot, and at that time, with only three major networks, that meant the show was first in line for the chopping block. Fans saved the show from cancellation following its second season, but the outpouring of support through a massive letter-writing campaign wasn't enough to bring the ill-fated show back from the edge of the cliff it was teetering on. Troubles continued and eventually, the series was put into the worst time slot on television. The stage had been set to bid farewell for the burgeoning series that would one day produce a massive franchise and enormous following.
