We started hypospadias foundation to help children and adults with hypospadias have best outcomes. This particular case depicts a poor outcome after earlier surgeries in childhood at some other centre. This 14 year old boy came to Hypospadias Foundation with urinary infections and difficulty in passing urine. We did cystoscopy and confirmed that the distal urethra was narrow in calibre and there was a diverticulum in the proximal penile urethra. We decided to reconstruct the entire urethra all over again so that child can have a normal sexual and urinary function later on in adult life. The best way to do this is to use oral mucosa graft. This graft can be taken from inside of cheek (buccal) or lips (labial). Lip (lingual) grafts can be taken from upper lip or lower lip and have in general better healing than cheek grafts. Lip grafts are thinner and take up better than cheek grafts. The child underwent surgery with good results. At our centre in Navi Mumbai, we get children with failed hypospadias from all over India and more than 20 countries. Working as a team over the last 15 years, we have achieved best outcomes for Hypospadias surgery. |
