Through two games into the 2013 season, Nick Marshall was anything but a polished passer. He had completed 56 percent of his passes for 123-yards passing per game on 6.8 yards per attempt. The Auburn Tigers opened their conference schedule at home against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, a team that defeated Auburn 28-10 the year before. Auburn came into the MSU game, averaging 299-yards rushing, but the Bulldogs would hold the Tigers to a season-low, 120-yards rushing.
With 1:56 remaining in the game, Auburn found themselves trailing 20-17 on the scoreboard and 88-yards away from the Mississippi State end zone. The Tigers would need to move the ball at least 55-yards to obtain field-goal range. Nick Marshall and the Auburn offense rose to the occasion, putting together a 12-play drive of 88-yards for the game-winning touchdown. The winning score came with only 15 seconds remaining in the game as Nick Marshall completed an 11-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Uzomah to win the game.
Nick Marshall finished the game with 339-yards passing on 23 of 34 passing. He was calm and collected throughout the drive, proving he could rise to the occasion, throwing the football. Most believe the LSU defeat turned the season around for the Tigers, committing to the read-option beginning with the Ole Miss game. In terms of leadership on the field, I believe it was the Mississippi State game that convinced the offensive personnel around Nick Marshall that he could deliver in the clutch.
Marshall finished the season with 3044-yards in total offense and 26 touchdowns, running and throwing. He put together one of the best two-year runs by an Auburn starting-quarterback. This Auburn Flashback covers the game-winning drive during one of the critical victories Auburn would need to win the 2013 SEC Championship and to advance to the BCS National Title Game.
