| Video Discription | Acute nerve injuries should be treated by suturing the two nerve ends together as quickly as possible so that the healing process can begin as soon as possible. In chronic nerve injuries, a nerve segment that has been damaged and lost can be bridged with a nerve graft obtained from the sural nerve in the leg. Several of these nerve graft segments can be spliced together between the nerve ends so that the nerve cells (axons), which provide hand sensation or motor function, can reach the skin or muscle to restore function. Improved sensation and motor function can be obtained, but it is rare to obtain full recovery of function following very severe injuries to the nerve. |
