| Video Discription | “The Quran says it’s ok to eat at McDonald’s but only if you order the McFish” – Zarqa Nawaz’s father Zarqa Nawaz (creator of the hit TV series Little Mosque on the Prairie) has always straddled two cultures. She finds herself agonizing about which sparkly earrings will ‘pimp out’ her hijab, or flirting with the Walmart meat manager to score the best Halal chicken just before Eid. Little Mosque on the Prairie’s success brought Zarqa’s edgy, irreverent, laugh-out-loud humour to the world. Now, in her just-released book Laughing All the Way to the Mosque, Zarqa tells the sometimes absurd, sometimes challenging, and always funny stories of being Zarqa. Spend an evening with this delightful, sharp, witty storyteller, as she invites us into her world. This session was made possible with the support of GEIST Magazine, jugnistyle, The Vancouver Writer's Festival, The Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures at SFU, and South Asian Arts. Thanks to SFU Woodwards for their partnership and for recording the session. In conversation with Zarqa Nawaz is award-winning actor, playwright, and dancer Anita Majumdar. In her own work (such as in the one-woman plays Fish-Eyes Trilogy ) Anita presents a unique cross-cultural perspective, looking at parental expectations and questions of identity with liberal doses of humour, sarcasm and empathy.
