Speaker: Dr. Nambi Narayanan
About the speaker:
Born on 12th Dec 1941 at Thiruvananthapuram in a middle class family. Graduated in Mechanical engineering from Madras University during 1965. Got his Post Graduate Degree,in the field of Chemical Rocket Propulsion, from Aerospace and Mechanical Sciences Dept of Princeton University, USA. Was a NASA Fellowship holder and worked on Combustion Instability in Liquid Rocket Propulsion Systems.
Joined ISRO during 1966. Assignments in ISRO includes Pyro Systems and Solid Rocket Propulsion Systems. Fathered the Liquid Propulsion Systems in ISRO. These include a 600 KG thrust Liquid Rocket known as LP006 to 60 tonne thrust ViKas Engine used in the second satge of PSLV/GSLV. The Vikas engine is used as a strap on for both GSLV and PSLV and successfully used in Mangalyaan and Chandrayaan Missions.
He had worked very closely with legends in the field of Space/Rocketry such Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam,Dr. Vikram A. Sarabhai ,Prof. Satish Dhawan , Dr. Brahm Prakash and Prof U. R. Rao.
He was the Project Directer for the second & fourth stages of PSLV. Associate Project Directer for both PSLV GSLV. He was also the Project Director of Cryogenic Liquid Propulsion Systems. He had contributed for a period of more than 35 years in the growth of ISRO from its inception and authored/supervised a large number of Technical Reports in the field of Rocketry.
He retired as Director, Advance Technology and Planning during Dec 2001
His autobiography titled Ormakalude Bhramanapatham (ഓർമകളുടെ ഭ്രമണപഥം) was released on 23 October 2017. His biography, in English, titled "Ready to Fire: How India & I Survived The ISRO Spy Case" is expected to release this year. Bollywood is producing a movie on his life.
This lecture was delivered on 28th Feb 2018 at IC&SR Hall, IIT Madras.
