Video Discription | A naturally occurring toxin, secondary metabolites produced by filamentous fungi (moulds), found in food like cereals, nuts, spices, dried fruits, apples, and coffee beans, often under warm and humid conditions. It can cause significant liver damage. They are categorized in polar and non-polar. (Examples) • aflatoxins: Aflatoxin B1 affects maize. • ochratoxin A: Produced by different Aspergillus and Penicillium species. Found in particularly contaminated grain and pork products, as well as coffee, wine grapes, and dried grapes. • patulin: Produced by Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Byssochlamys. Most commonly found in rotting apples. • fumonisins • zearalenone • T-2 mycotoxin • nivalenol • deoxynivalenol (Elimination or detoxification of toxin) • Elimination Anti-mycotoxin agents or mycotoxin-adsorbing agents are large molecular weight compounds that are not digested and end in the faeces. They must be able to bind mycotoxins without dissociating along the gastrointestinal tract and eliminated via faeces. For example, aflatoxins (polar) are included by an adsorbent like bentonite. Anti-mycotoxin agents are only effective for mycotoxins in the same category. Polar anti-mycotoxins are effective for polar mycotoxins and not for non-polar ones, and vice versa. • Detoxification Absorbed mycotoxins which are not excreted in the faeces are detoxified in the liver same as all other toxins. (Natural remedy) Milk thistle is an herb plant. It can be used as oral treatment of toxin liver damage and therapy of chronic inflammatory liver diseases. The seeds contain approximately 4-6% silymarin. The extract consists of about 65-80% silymarin (a flavonolignan complex) and 20-35% fatty acids (including linoleic acid). Silymarin is a complex mixture of polyphenolic molecules and has strong antioxidant, immunostimulating, anti-inflammatory, and regenerating properties. It is believed that silymarin has hepatoprotective activity by binding to cell membranes to suppress penetration of toxins into hepatic cells, increasing superoxide dismutase activity, increasing glutathione tissue concentration, inhibiting lipid peroxidation, and enhancing hepatocyte protein synthesis. |
