La visita al Museo Naval de Madrid no deja indiferente a nadie. Quizás porque resulta chocante, para empezar, que una ciudad sin mar y sin puerto alguno posea una colección tan increíble. Y para seguir, porque la colección en sí misma es espectacular ya que tiene objetos de un gran valor histórico y artístico.
La visita, gratuita aunque se solicita una donación de 3 euros para mantener el museo, comienza en los albores de la navegación moderna en España. Todo comienza en el siglo XIII aunque realmente es en el siglo XV donde el país se convierte en una potencia naval. Es entonces cuando los Reyes Católicos comienzan a mandar misiones por todo el mundo para recorrer los mares y descubrir nuevas tierras.
En las primeras salas podremos ver objetos de gran valor, como por ejemplo astrolabios que servían para hacer posible la navegación. También hay réplicas a escala de los barcos que llegaron a América, así como cuadros en los que se puede ver a Cristóbal Colón contactando con los indígenas americanos. Uno de los elementos más importantes es la carta de navegación de Juan de la Cosa, fechada en el año 1500.
Continúa la visita adentrándonos en un gran período para el imperio español, donde nunca se pone el sol. Y es que por aquel entonces, en los siglos XVI y XVII, la cantidad de territorios acumulados en Europa, América y Asia hacían que la armada española fuera temida en todo el mundo.
Hay objetos tan increíbles como una réplica de un galeón flamenco, un montante de don Juan de Austria y un importante número de cuadros en los que se representan, entre otras cosas, la famosa batalla de Lepanto.
Sin embargo, no es hasta el siglo XVIII cuando se crea la Real Armada española, en un momento de la historia en el que todas las potencias europeas pugnaban por el dominio de los mares en todo el mundo. Ese período fue clave en el comienzo del declive del imperio español, que tuvo lugar principalmente en el siglo XIX.
Lo primero que hay que saber es que a principios del siglo XVIII hubo un cambio de monarquía con la llegada de los Borbones y de Felipe V. Fue él quien impulsó de nuevo a la armada para que recuperar la presencia en todos los mares. Con este objetivo, la Real Compañía de Guardias Marinas se creó 1717 para la formación de los marinos españoles. Además, se crearon 3 departamentos marítimos: Cádiz para las Indias, Cartagena para el Mediterráneo y El Ferrol para el Atlántico.
Hay una sala especialmente relevante que rinde tributo, casi en exclusiva, a la figura de Blas de Lezo. Aunque en España no termina de ser muy conocido, en tierras británicas no pudo tener peor fama pues derrotó a los ejércitos de las islas en 1741 defendiendo la ciudad colombiana de Cartagena de Indias. Y lo hizo a pesar de estar en clara inferioridad numérica y militar.
Llegamos a una de las salas más grandes del Museo Naval, la dedicada a los Arsenales y a la Construcción Naval del siglo XVIII. Allí podremos ver, principalmente, maquetas de barcos, maquetas de los puertos del imperio español en Cádiz, Cartagena y El Ferrol, así como restos de diferentes embarcaciones, cañones y mucho más. Por su gran tamaño, en una de las paredes no podremos dejar de ver el repostero de la casa Fernán Núñez, realizado en seda roja y montado sobre la vela de una galera turca que participó en la batalla de Lepanto.
