One day, while Spillman was playing live, bullets started flying and a big explosion shook the building, hurting him. It was like something from a movie, but for Spillman, it was just another chaotic day. Even in this scary moment, a normal thing happened. A girl came up to Spillman and told him she loved his piano playing, even with all the mess around. Imagine someone saying they like your cooking while the kitchen is on fire—that's how strange yet sweet this moment was. But then, reality hit hard. Spillman came home and saw his family packing to run away. But Spillman didn't want to leave. He said he would rather die at home if it came to that. It was like someone refusing to leave the land where they grew up, no matter what. Soon, the German soldiers took over more, making life very hard for Jewish people like Spillman and his family. Imagine being treated differently and not allowed to go places, like having a big "keep out" sign on you. Later, Jobs disappeared, and it got very hard to live. Spillman even had to sell his precious piano, which was like giving up his voice to survive. Spillman and his family were then forced to live in a very small place.
