(Sept. 19) "The United Nations and humanitarian community has put out an initial response plane, which is for 357 million (m) US dollars to help the flood affected families in Pakistan for up to six months, in the areas of food, water, shelter and health care, primarily the life saving needs that people are facing after a big emergency such as this in the floods." Monsoon rains have flooded large parts of Pakistan southern Sindh province over the last six weeks, killing more than 200 people and displacing more than 1.8 (m) million people, according to a report by United Nations. The floods have destroyed around 665-thousand homes, and forced residents of Badin, the worst hit district around 200 kilometres (124 miles) from Karachi, to leave their houses for temporary shelters and tents. Pakistan often experiences flooding from monsoon rains that lash much of South Asia from June to September. This year the rains have been heavier than normal, coming as many people were still trying to recover from last year''s floods, which were the worst in the country''s history. Mohammad Hashim, a flood victim who has been living in a tent with his family, complained that they were not receiving enough aid from the Pakistani government. "My house was destroyed. We have been sitting here since last week. We did not get any relief, we are eating our own food, we are helpless, nothing left to eat. Where do we go?" said Mohammad Hashim. The United Nations meanwhile, has appealed for 357 (m) million US dollars to help millions of Pakistanis affected by floods. The money from the appeal would be used to help more than 5.4 (m) million people in the provinces of Sindh and Baluchistan over the next six months, said a spokeswoman for the UN''s humanitarian arm. Those provinces have been the worst hit by the floods this year. Stacey Melissa Winston, advocacy and donor relations officer at United Nations said the money will cover areas such as "food, water, shelter and health care." "We would like to be able to reach as many people as possible with humanitarian assistance as mentioned ... to help them to move forward so that they can hopefully return to their homes and recover," she said. The return of the floods is testament to the heaviness of the monsoon rains and the limits of Pakistan''s weak and corrupt government, showing up its ineffectiveness in the crisis. In 2010, the floods followed the course of the River Indus and its tributaries from the foothills of the Himalayas to the flatlands of Sindh, where the river empties out into the Arabian Sea. As much as one-fifth of the country''s landmass and 20 (m) million people were affected at the peak, making it one of the largest natural disasters in recent history.
