Extremely brief footage, unfortunately with no audio, of Wolves fans packed into the North Bank at Molineux circa 1970.
It has been suggested that the North Bank Choir first formed on 10th March 1965 for the FA Cup quarter-final match against Manchester United. Whether this precise origin is correct or not, the 'Cowshed' was to become the Wolves equivalent to the Liverpool Kop and offered a raucous and vociferous support. Indeed, such was the level of vocal support from the North Bank for a match against Arsenal in August 1968, for example, that a journalist for a national newspaper hailed the Wolves support as "the best organised support for a team that I've heard outside the Kop at Liverpool."
By the mid-late 1970s the most vociferous support at Molineux had switched to the South Bank and almost a decade later the North Bank stood completely empty -- a victim of the safety measures that were implemented in the wake of the Bradford Fire Disaster. As Wolves suffered successive relegations to Division 4 so the 'Cowshed' mirrored this sad decline into near ruin. Its weed infested empty terraces stood in silent contrast to the intimidating din once generated by the incessant hammering of the corrugated metal sheeting at the back of the stand, the heavy foot-stamping of wooden terraces and the frequent chants that reverberated loudly around the old stand.
Thankfully, through the largesse of Wolves President Sir Jack Hayward and, latterly, owner Steve Morgan the North Bank has returned to life in all its shining modernity, but the North Bank's previous incarnation will never be forgotton by those who stood on its packed and swaying terraces. |
