Known for making fun of the Nazis in his classic films The Producers, Blazing Saddles, and To Be or Not To Be, Mel Brooks experienced the real thing while he was assigned to the 78th Infantry Division as a forward artillery observer during World War II. Later, in early 1945, Mel Brooks was transferred to the 1104th Engineer Combat Group. Mr. Brooks was given the highly dangerous job of probing for German landmines so they could be cleared from the leading edge of battle areas. At times, Brooks' unit also fought as infantry, suffering numerous casualties in the process. Even as a young man fighting in deadly circumstances, Mel Brooks explains in this interview that he could still find humor in these horrendous conditions, experiences that would later inform his remarkable movie career. |
