| Video Discription | What does Maundy Thursday mean? Maundy Thursday is a common name for Holy Thursday, which is the Thursday before Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Holy Thursday is the beginning of the Paschal Triduum, the holiest three days of the Church year. On Thursday night Christians remember the events of the Last Supper when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. This is a practice many churches imitate today with priests and pastors washing the feet of various members of the congregation. The word "Maundy" comes from the words Jesus spoke to his disciples in the Gospel of John during the Last Supper discourses: "I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another" (Jn 13:34). This is the verse before the Gospel in the Roman Rite on Holy Thursday. Jesus speaks these words shortly after washing the feet of his disciples. "Maundy" comes from the Latin word "Mandatum," which means mandate or commandment. On Holy Thursday we are reminded of Jesus' Mandatum Novum, his new commandment to love one another as he loved us. This is perfectly expressed by the ceremonial washing of feet to commemorate the model of love Jesus showed for us during the Last Supper.
