Welcome to the coverage of the 26th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The hosts West Indies will square off against New Zealand at Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba.
Matches are coming thick and fast in the ongoing T20 World Cup and in game number 26, the West Indies will square off against New Zealand in a Group C clash at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba on Thursday (June 13).
Both teams have had contrasting starts to their campaigns. While New Zealand began with a shocking defeat against Afghanistan, the co-hosts West Indies have struggled but got two wins in as many games against Papua New Guinea and Uganda.
The Kiwis, in their last game, conceded 159 for 6 after Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bowl first.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran put on a 100-run stand for the second consecutive time in the tournament and laid the platform for a big finish.
However, New Zealand bowlers chipped in with wickets towards the backend of the innings and restricted Afghanistan to under 160.
In the chase, New Zealand lost Finn Allenn on the very first ball of their innings. Devon Conway and skipper Kane Williamson added 18 runs for the second wicket but the former lost his wicket for just 8 runs off 10 balls.
New Zealand kept losing wickets at regular intervals and 9 of their batters failed to reach double figures. Glenn Phillips was the top-scorer with a knock of 18 and later Matt Henry scored 12 runs before the Kiwis were bundled out for 75 runs in 15.2 overs.
On the flip side, the West Indies, in their previous fixture, outclassed Uganda by a whopping 134 runs.
Johnson Charles led the way for the West Indies, scoring 44 runs off 42 balls. Nicholas Pooran (22), skipper Rovman Powell (23) and Sherfane Rutherford (22) all contributed with the bat.
Andre Russell's unbeaten 30 off 17 lifted the Windies to a huge total of 173 for 5 in their 20 overs.
With the ball, Akeal Hosein ran through the Uganda batting line-up and bowled a match-winning spell of 5 for 11 in his four overs.
Alzarri Joseph picked up 2 wickets in his 3 overs and gave away only 6 runs. Gudakesh Motie, Russell and Romario Shepherd all picked up one wicket each to bowl out Uganda for 39 in 12 overs.
A win for the West Indies will all but confirm their place in the Super 8s while a defeat would make things difficult for New Zealand.
