He had retired from public life in September last year after being diagnosed with advanced Alzheimer's. Ahtisaari was president of Finland for one term from 1994 to 2000. During that time, he oversaw the national referendum to join the European Union. and in 2008 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in resolving international conflicts. Ahtisaari was born in 1937, in the former Finnish town of Viipuri which is now the Russian town of Vyborg.
