| Video Discription | Macrostomia or abnormally large mouth is a very rare facial birth deformity. It occurs because of disturbances in normal development of the face in the embryonic stages. These are also called as Transverse Facial Clefts and are classified as Tessier Craniofacial cleft No. 7. They vary in severity from slight widening of the mouth to a cleft extending to the ear. More commonly they occur on one side of the face only (unilateral) but can also be present on both sides (bilateral). They may be associated with some syndrome conditions. Macrostomia drastically affects the facial appearance making the mouth look expanded. Moreover there is constant drooling, severe difficulties in feeding, speaking & difficulty in blowing. Timely surgical correction is paramount. The goal of surgical correction must be to achieve good aesthetics and better function of orbicularis oris muscle of the mouth. First, the position of the new corner of the mouth is marked. Skin incision was made and deepened to the submucosal fat pad. The bundles of muscles were sutured together. The key point is closure of the defect in layers. The success of the surgery lies in achieving minimal scarring which does not become visible during facial expressions and natural looking, symmetrical lips and mouth.
