| Video Discription | This video describes the removal of a limbal dermoid from the eye of an 18 year old boy. A limbal dermoid is a benign congenital lesion that includes skin elements, which have normal structure but are found in an abnormal location (which is why this lesion is called choristoma). It may be small or large, and is usually strongly adherent to the underlying cornea and sclera. Clinically it may seem as a distinctive lesion with well defined borders, but there are no true distinct borders histopathologically, as can be seen in sections of excised lesions. As there is no natural dissection plane between the lesion and the normal cornea and sclera, it may be difficult to remove surgically. The attempted cleavage plane at the cornea may leave a very thin residual stroma. Therefore it may be advisable to have a cornea donor tissue ready for transplantation, as a back-up in case of an inadvertent perforation.
