👉 Some women have pathology in the uterus that forces them to remove the uterus called hysterectomy. But some women are at reproductive age, thus, with menstrual cycles and with functioning ovaries. ✅ On one hand, the uterus has the function of receiving the embryo after being fertilized in the fallopian tubes, while the ovaries have a dual function: they produce the oocyte, the cell that unites with the spermatozoon and allows offspring, but also the ovaries produce the sexual hormones, mainly estrogens and progesterone, which begin to decrease significantly with the onset of menopause and that is that is why women stop having menstrual cycles.
✅ However, after menopause nowadays it is known that they continue to produce estrogens and progesterone although in a very low dose.
✅ Here you can see the uterus in the central part next to the tubes and the ovaries on each side. That’s why, for women who need to have their uterus removed and are still with their ovaries functioning with menstrual cycles, the fallopian tubes are only removed with the ovaries still left in, as you see here.
✅ For those women in whom also the ovaries need to be removed the ovaries are sectioned beyond them. Whereas in this type of case, for example, the woman has functional ovaries. The ovaries are removed between the ovary and the uterus to preserve them, then the uterus continues to shed neighboring structures like the ligaments or the bladder itself and that green device you see here is nothing more than a uterine manipulator that we place before the surgery that allows us to correctly identify which is the precise limit where we have to separate the uterus from the vagina.
✅ Finally, as you see here the uterus together with the tubes is removed through the vagina and the ovaries. as you see here, each one on each side (in white) are left in the female body. The procedure ends with the closure of the vaginal vault, and it is for this reason that we recommend women not to have sexual intercourse for at least 30 to 40 days approximately to avoid this scar opening.
✅ As you have seen it is feasible at the time of a hysterectomy to keep both ovaries in women where their ovaries are still functioning, this will allow us to solve the uterine problem which forced us to perform the surgery but avoid a surgical menopause that comes with all the negative consequences which this can have on the quality of life and life expectancy of each woman.
