| Video Discription | Step by step demonstration of a laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair via the TEP (totally extraperitoneal) approach utilizing advanced minimally invasive techniques. This video also demonstrates telescopic pre-peritoneal dissection without the aide of a balloon dissector. Balloon dissectors, although widely utilized for this operation, are unnecessary and increases the cost of the operation. Telescopic dissection allows for a relatively bloodless dissection plane and once mastered does not add significant operative time to perform. Furthermore it allows for unilateral laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair without disrupting tissue planes on the opposite side which anecdotally decreases pain after surgery. Benefits of laparoscopic repair include less pain, smaller incisions, better cosmetic results, earlier return to work and faster recovery. TEP hernia repair is in contrast to TAPP (trans-abdominal pre-peritoneal) hernia repair the latter of which enters the abdominal cavity and the former never violates the peritoneum. TEP has the added advantage of causing less scaring. Outcomes are similar between the two as is recurrence rates.
