About a decade back, inguinal hernia surgery entailed an open operation, which is used to take the patient to be hospitalised for a minimum of 2 to 3 days and sometimes had to be off work for almost about a week. Nowadays with this Laparoscopic hernia, which is now slowly recognized as a gold standard in the treatment of hernia, is a surgery, which enables the patient to recover very fast. The patient is usually admitted in the morning with all the preoperative investigations worked up. He undergoes the surgery and by afternoon, post-operative after a couple of hours after the surgery he will have his meal and by evening he is discharged. The patient probably requires about 24 hours to completely recover and return to his day to day activities and back to his office. This had changed the whole concept about hernia surgery and the recovery. |
