| Video Discription | Known as the “Butcher of Lyon”, Nazi Klaus Barbie was estimated to have been responsible for the torture and murder of thousands. Yet this Gestapo chief's subsequent employment by US and Western German espionage agencies would help him evade justice for decades. After the war, Barbie joined other fugitive Nazis in participating in arms trafficking and torture on behalf of Latin American dictators. Finally located in Bolivia in 1971, he was only extradited to France a decade later. He died behind bars in 1991, four years into a life sentence. Drawing upon the work of German historian Peter Hammerschmidt, this film sheds new light on the secret history of Klaus Barbie, examining why he remained at large for so long. |
