This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event, and for many in attendance the death of B.C. Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was top of mind. Nijjar was gunned down in his truck outside the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara on June 18, 2023. The killing has become a major diplomatic flashpoint in Canada-India relations.
