| Video Discription | In November and December of 2016, I spent 6 weeks in the karma yoga program at Ananda Village. Ananda Village is a spiritual community in Northern California, founded by Swami Kriyananda, and based on the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda. There are about 300 residents who live, work, and raise families there. There is a market, a farm, a school (k-12) and plans for a college. There are departments for communications, a publishing house, fundraising, property management, etc. Part of the village includes a retreat center, The Expanding Light. The EL retreat center hosts programming from short weekend courses to month-long yoga teacher trainings throughout the year. The karma yoga program is like a work exchange/ashram experience, where you volunteer your time daily in selfless service which might include anything from dishwashing, window washing, or toilet scrubbing to clearing brush or fixing machinery. There are also daily yoga/meditation/introspection experiences. Most people are there to deepen their inner connection with god and guru. After karma yoga, some people choose to take steps towards moving to the village. It's a very spiritual space, and I found within myself a deep contentment in just being myself.
