| Video Discription | With misconceptions rife around the legal and religious implications of becoming a full time guardian of a non-biological child in #Egypt, families are often unwilling to consider ‘kafala’ as an option. Indeed the difference between ‘kafala’ (which is sanctioned in Islam) and ‘adoption’ (in the Western sense of the word) are often confused leading to a societal and cultural unwillingness to give orphaned children a much needed home. Couples - even those who are unable to conceive – considering ‘kafala’ are often dissuaded by their families or communities. There are, however, a few grassroots organisations and initiatives working tirelessly to destigmatise ‘kafala’ and encourage Egyptians to embrace this extraordinary act of love. In this special #CairoScene feature, we speak to Rasha Mekky who defied convention by openly telling the story of her ‘kafala’ and in the process created the Yalla Kafala foundation to educate, enlighten and support. In the last two years alone she has helped over 1,000 families start their ‘kafala’ journeys. Also featured in our story are Dr. Hassan Khali l- a representative of Al-Azhar - who helps shed light on ‘kafala’ in Islam, while Reem Amin from the Ministry of Social Solidarity provides clarity on the legalities and processes involved. Nabile Gabalwi who works with ‘FACE’s’ family integration programme and Hend Taha, a ‘kafala’ mother and vocal advocate, also enrich our understanding of ‘kafala’. 🎥 : MO4 Network. |
