He belongs to the traditional Senia Shahjehanpur Gharana. Born in 1982, he took to playing the Sarod since 1987 from an early age of four years under the able guidance and tutelage of illustrious Guru, Sangeetacharya Pranab Kumar Naha, one of the notable disciples of the legendary musician Sangeetacharyya Late Pt. Radhika Mohan Maitra, and continuing his ‘Talim’ under him till date. Joydeep is also taking his “Talim” on lay karis and bol bani from the Tabla exponent Pt. Debashish Sarkar, a disciple of Late Pt. Kanai Dutta & Late Pt. Jnan Prakash Ghosh, since 2013. He stood 1st across various All India Music competitions since childhood. His performing career started from a very young age as he has been performing across various prestigious music conferences across and has been extensively covered across 1000+ print & electronic media across the globe. He has been appreciated by Padma Vibhusan Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, Padma Bhusan Late Pt. Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Pt. L K Pandit, and many others . He has been bestowed with the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for 2019 by the Sangeet Natak Academi in the instrumental music category for Sarod & Sursingar. On 26th February 2023, the Honourable Prime Minister of India Shree Narendra Modi had appreciated him whole heartedly in the most popular Radio Program of India Mann Ki Baat (98th edition). He was felicitated by the Honourable Governor of West Bengal, Dr. C V Ananda Bose, on 30th April, 2023, on the occasion of 100th episode of Mann Ki Baat, for significant contributions in the field of music at the Raj Bhawan, Kolkata – the program organized by The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Govt. of India. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs of Government of India, provided him Junior Fellowship in Instrumental Music for 2021-2022. He was invited by the Government of India to perform at the G20 Leaders’ Summit held in New Delhi in front of the Honourable President, PM, Vice President, Cabinet Ministers and World Leaders of G20 countries, at Bharat Mandapam on 9 th September, 2023. He has also spread Indian Classical Music across World Music Festivals like the ZIRO Festival in Arunachal Pradesh (where he was greeted by the Honourable Chief Minister of Arunachal, Shree Pema Khandu) and across numerous schools, colleges and Universities of India through SPIC MACAY throughout India in several cities, towns and villages. He is also an avid composer and voracious experimenter, and have been deeply inspired by the works of Padma Bhusan Pt. Buddhadeb Dasgupta. Motivated by Pt. Dasgupta’s works on Transformations of Tagore’s songs, he has composed so far 20+ classical instrumental bandishes out of Tagore’s songs.
