BIGGEST Lies In Japan! Uncover the truth... Busting Myths: The Real Japan Experience
⛩️When I first moved to Japan, I was inundated with these grand notions about the country - the healthiest people, futuristic technology everywhere, and incredibly friendly locals. But as I settled in, I began to see through some of these myths.
First off, let's tackle the idea that Japanese people are the epitome of health. Sure, they do live long lives, but that's not solely due to their diet. Ramen, for example, might seem like a quintessential Japanese dish, but it's often packed with sodium. And while fish consumption is high, so is the consumption of other less healthy options like tempura and curry rice loaded with salt and fat. I used to think I'd magically shed pounds just by being here, but reality hit hard. There's even a law called the metabo law, where people over 40 have to get their waist measured, and companies face fines if their staff is overweight. The pressure to stay slim is palpable, but the diet isn't always as healthy as it's made out to be.
Then there's the myth of Japan being this futuristic wonderland filled with robots and cutting-edge tech. While that's true to an extent, a significant portion of the population, particularly those over 60, still rely on older technology like fax machines and flip phones. In the workplace especially, tradition holds strong, and embracing the newest gadgets isn't always the norm.
Lastly, the notion that Japanese people are inherently friendly is a bit of a half-truth. Sure, on the surface, interactions are polite and helpful, but forging deeper connections can be challenging. There's a strong emphasis on avoidance culture, where rocking the boat or expressing controversial opinions is discouraged. Making friends takes time and effort, as there's a tendency to keep thoughts and feelings to oneself to maintain harmony.
Living in Japan has been eye-opening, and while there's certainly truth to some of the stereotypes, there's also a lot more nuance beneath the surface.
