Hello everyone!
These are my 6 wriggly dojo loaches and a Shubunkin goldfish. They live in a 75 gallon filter sump tank that is part of a 150 gallon coldwater/fast flow system. In this video I show you close up shots of their activity, some shots of their tank showing the layout and a couple of feeding sequences.
The tank has very little decor and no plants to give these active fish as much space as possible. On the left side is a Hamburgermattenfilter foam that filters the entire system.
I really enjoy these fish, especially the dojo loaches. They are always swimming around, sifting through the substrate and just generally do such interesting things. They also seem to be really friendly and come over to my hand whenever it's in the water, sometimes just to nibble or wriggle in it.
Dojo loaches (also known as pond loaches) are very easy to find, they are always readily available at both your local fish store as well as big box chains. They are very hardy, resistant to disease and very tolerant of a wide range of water parameters and temperature... In fact, they are considered invasive species in some locations. Dojo loaches are also known as weather loaches due to their uncanny ability to react to changes in barometric pressure such as when a storm or rain approaches. They can grow to 12" in the wild or in ponds but often grown only to 5-6" in home aquariums when they are kept in less than ideal conditions. I am happy that my loaches have grown to their current size although the wild-type ones seem to have grown much bigger than the golden/albino. Dojo loaches are easy to feed and seemingly have insatiable appetites. It's easy to overfeed dojo loaches and make them too fat which increases their risk of diseases such as fatty liver.
Shubunkin goldfish are a variety of single-tailed goldfish and are also considered quite hardy. Growing to a maximum size of 5-8" in an aquarium and up to 16" in a pond, Shubunkin are known as attractive breeding variants of the common goldfish. What is so beautiful about a Shubunkin are its spotted colours of red, yellow, orange, blue, white and black in combination with metallic and transparent scales. This makes a Shubunkin have some kind of a mother-of-pearl appearance. It has a simple tail and long spotted fins.
