| Video Discription | The King is the central archetype, and we find that Captain Kirk is adorned with symbols of the center. Kirk’s command division tunic is golden like the sun. A star embellishes Kirk’s delta shield, both symbolize the center of a solar system. Gold is the king of metals, and the king’s golden crown is a symbol of the his regal power and authority, also connected etymologically to the sun’s corona, the crown of light visible during a total solar eclipse. The name Kirk is Gaelic for church, and as such is another symbol of the center. Historically speaking, a church could be found at the center of every the village or town. The local church was the center of town life. Vasquez Rocks, as seen in the episode “Arena,” and in this video’s thumbnail, represents the dominance hierarchy, with Kirk in his rightful place at the zenith. It’s symbolically fitting that Kirk, as the King in his fullness, climbs to the apex, the single highest point, in order to secure the realm and make it safe once again from the predatory Gorn. Considering Kirk, Spock, and the others from an archetypal perspective helps us to understand Star Trek’s narratives in a new, more profound way.
