At the moment the Platinum card is offering a pretty hefty 100,000 points signup bonus when you spend $6000 in the first six months which is actually not that bad and 100,000 points is worth at least $1000 but they have a number of travel partners that we’ll take a look at in a minute that actually allow you to get 2 to $4000 of value out of those points.
Before we go any further with the features I do want to rip the band-aid and tell you that the American Express platinum card does have an insane $695 annual fee. You are able to recoup most of that directly from the credits that this card gives you but as I've said many times before if the credits are not things that you would be buying anyway then really you're not getting any net benefit. You also get 10 points per dollar at all restaurants worldwide on up to $25,000 in purchases for the first six months of having this card. You also get five points per dollar for all flights and hotels booked through American Express Travel and one point on all other purchases.
Currently, you're going to get a $200 hotel credit, a $240 digital entertainment credit, a $155 Walmart plus credit, a $200 Uber cash credit that can be used for either Uber or Uber eats, a $200 airline fee credit, a $300 equinox credit, a free clear membership which has a value of $179 and a free TSA precheck or global entry membership with is $100 meaning just from those credits alone you're getting $1574 of value not including the points multipliers or the signup bonus. You also get the global lounge collection through American Express which gives you access to not only the very nice but rather hard-to-find Centurion lounges but also more than 1300 airport lounges across 140 different countries.
In a nutshell, the Capital One venture X card is going to give you a 100,000 point sign-up bonus when you spend $10,000 in the first six months plus 10,000 points, or in this case Capital One calls them miles anniversary bonus for every year that you have this card. You also get a $300 annual travel credit that can be used when booking through Capital One travel as well as a $200 vacation rental credit for your first year and a free TSA pre-check or global entry credit which again has a value of about 100 bucks. As far as point multipliers you're going to get 10 points per dollar on all hotels and rental cars booked through capital and travel, five points on flights booked through Capital One travel, and two points on all other purchases. And last but not least with the Capital One venture X card you get a free priority pass membership which gives you access to 1300 VIP lounges.
So if you're brand new to the premium credit card market then I would go with the venture X card which is a fantastic product that I know I am personally going to add to my wallet in the near future. But if you're going to use the credits that American Express offers and you're able to justify that higher annual fee then the platinum card is a tried and true product that is going to give you some insane benefits and give you that truly premium travel experience.
