From the abstract: Full Title : Robotic assisted excision of a large retrosternal goiter with combined cervical excision : A novel minimally invasive approach Method : 56 years female known case of Multinodular Goiter thyroid, operated 2 decades back for thyroid pathology presented with recurrent neck mass and persistent cough . CECT neck and chest showed large heterogenously enhancing lesion arising from inferior aspect of left thyroid lobe extending into the superior mediastinum. The intrathoracic component measured 11x6x5 cms partially encasing the left brachiocephalic vein. The patient underwent Robotic mediastinal excision of large retrosternal goiter with combined cervical approach thus avoiding a median sternotomy. The post operative course was uneventful and the patient recovered well, and was discharged on 3rd post operative day. The benefits of robotic surgical system are well accepted and were instrumental in excision of this locally advanced anterior mediastinal mass with innovative combined cervical approach. Result : Robotic assisted mediastinal and thoracic surgeries are widely accepted worldwide and score over VATS and open approaches in many ways. Robotic surgery can be used for unusual scenarios and can well be combined with conventional approaches for an optimal patient outcome.
