“LIVE SIMPLY SO THAT OTHERS MAY SIMPLY LIVE.”
– MK Gandhi
An innovative appeal for behavioural change… to live simply in big cities of the world so that we in the mountains can simply live.
We in Ladakh Himalayas are at the forefront of the impacts of climate change. My team and students at our alternative SECMOL (Students’ Educational & Cultural Movement of Ladakh) and HIAL (Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh) in Ladakh have been instrumental in innovative measures for climate change adaptation in the mountains. These have ranged from Ice Stupa artificial glaciers to low water consuming farming techniques to solar heated mud buildings and much more but we find that these measures will get us nowhere as long as the people in big cities of the world continue business as usual.
Therefore, from this 150th Gandhi Jayanti on 2nd October, we are starting a global appeal for behavioural change called… the #ilivesimply movement…. In many innovative fun ways we will be urging people of the world to make their contribution to healing the planet through a unique crowd-funding campaign where one does not pay any money but makes behaviour change pledges on an internet site. The site tells you how many dollars worth of service for the planet, that action will amount to in a year.
For example, a pledge to not use single-use plastic could amount to a contribution worth $1000. Or a pledge to go vegetarian may amount to $5000. Similarly, other behavioural changes like choosing trains instead of flights, stairs instead of elevators, bicycles instead of cars and planting trees will all be evaluated by the site and a total global contribution will be worked out around the New Year 2020, which may run into trillions of dollars. Partners organisations are expected to develop Apps, games, websites and start city clubs around the idea to make it easy and fun for everyone, especially children to join this movement.
As the world is into protests and strikes for the planet we believe that India can contribute in its unique way by encouraging people to also change their personal behaviours. The main campaign will be launched in December to coincide with the New Year celebrations when people around the world make resolutions.
From 2nd October 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi we start our campaign to crowd-source partners for this global movement…
Partners could be Reputed institutes, government bodies, environmental organisations and movements, corporates, software companies, game developers, celebrities and passionate individuals who can volunteer to take this movement forward.

About Sonam Wangchuk:
Sonam Wangchuk was born in the trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh, India. Though a Mechanical Engineer by education, he has been mostly working in the field of education reform for more than 27 years. In 1988, just after he finished his engineering studies he founded SECMOL (Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh) www.secmol.org, which aims to bring reforms in the government school system in Ladakh. As an engineer, Sonam Wangchuk has been teaching innovation at the SECMOL Alternative School, where together with the students he designed and built solar heated buildings that are low cost, made of earth/mud but maintain +15 C even when the outside temperature is – 15 C in Ladakhi winters. In order to solve the water crisis facing mountain regions due to climate change and fast melting glaciers, he invented the Ice Stupa artificial glacier which stores the wasting stream waters in winter in the form of giant ice cones or stupas and releases the water in late spring as they melt, just when farmers need water.
