“is it really possible to induct extra AMCA and skip Tejas MK2 or completely skip tejas mk2 and induct AMCA on its place”.
We will not go into the details of what air chief has said or not because it irrelevant to discuss about. There are 4 main reasons for not inducting AMCA over Tejas Mk 2 or LCA AF 2. No. 1 AMCA is 5th generation fighter, now IAF neither have any fifth gen. fighter jet nor had any experience of that. The critical technologies involved in making of AMCA needs to be proven. For that purpose tejas MK2 will have an important role to play. AMCA will be advance fighter jets than Tejas MK2. However AMCA will have EW suit, IRST sensor, Self-protection jammer pod, Uttam Radar, Astra MK2 Missiles and much. All these technologies need to be proven somewhere and for this reason we need tejas mk2. No. 2 Till date Mk1 production hasn’t stabilized. Mk1A and Mk2 will help us fully refine this. When mass scale production of AMCA begins, it can start with LRUs (line-replaceable unit) that are well tested, operated, refined and mass produced. It will also be able to produce AMCA at mass scale from day 1. No. 3 AMCA will have higher cost and maintenance requirement due to its stealth characteristics. Now, IAF cannot operate AMCA in large numbers due to numerous reasons such as budget constraints. Even USA is planning to build 4.5th generation fighter jet after operating f-35 for over two decades. USA is old and 1st operator of actual 5th generation fighter jet over 2 decades of experience. We all know that how much it cost to operate 5th generation fighter jets. So tejas mk2 will have its place in IAF along with AMCA. It doesn’t matter whether air chief marshal mention it in its statement or not. Without induction of Tejas mk2 it will be difficult for indian air force to meet it squadron strength to 35.
No. 4 More than 60% work prior to the flight tests have been completed for tejas mk2. This includes completion of finalization of cockpit configuration, sensors, antennae, process finalization for drawing release, procurement of raw materials & its availability assessment, detailed design of various subsystems, finalization of SOPs for first flight. Now so much work has been done with tejas mk2 will not go in vain. This advancement of tejas mk2 is clear indication that IAF is committed towards the development of Tejas mk2. Now if everything goes as per plan the First prototype of the aircraft will roll out by August 2022 and the flight tests will commence from 2023 onwards.
Now, the question is “Why Indian Air Force is going ahead with 7 squadrons of Tejas MK2 compared to initial 9-10 squadrons?” Tejas MK2 will enter production by 2027-28, which is 6-7 years from now. The initial production rate will be slow because it’s going to be a completely new fighter with different airframe and engine than Tejas MK1 & MK1A variants. The fighter might face some technical challenges too and it could be expected to enter full fledge production only by 2029-30. This could also affect the AMCA production which Indian Air force does not want to delay; otherwise it might again become obsolete by the time it will be inducted. This leads to two major challenges before Indian Air force, no.1 declining squadron strength and no. 2 early induction of AMCA. Which is why, we can see the reduced order of Tejas MK2 and air chief also mentioned two important points in which air force will focus on increasing the order for Tejas and focus on AMCA program.
