It’s a bit of an odd one out in the Bible: there’s no storyline, no clear reference to God, and certainly no fire and brimstone - as you’d expect. Instead, it’s one elegant love poem, where a young couple expresses their desire for one another. It’s arguably the finest example of ancient Hebrew poetry we have, although contains some unusual metaphors. From describing a lover's hair as "like a flock of goats", to her neck being "like the tower of David"; taking it literally, we get a bizarre, amusing, and unnerving picture. In biblical scholarship today, the Song of Songs has been viewed within its historical context. In fact, plenty of the neighbouring civilisations in the ancient Near East had their own love poetry.
