The BA plane from Naples to Gatwick landed at 12.34am, forcing the closure of the runway and the diversion of eight other flights. Footage from inside moments after the emergency landing showed passengers were visibly shaken and in tears - but they clapped and cheered as the captain thanked them for staying calm. Speaking on the Tannoy he said: 'I didn't want to put you through this but once again I thank you for all your patience and understanding. We are now safely here'.
