The answer is no. Usually heavy bleeding during periods is because of increase in the thickness of the inner layer of the uterus which we call as the endometrium. The endometrium can be very thick in women who have increase in the level of a hormone called as estrogen. This is very common in women who have a condition called as polycystic ovaries. We see that in women who have polycystic ovaries and invariably women who are obese along with this condition of polycystic ovaries usually have increased levels of estrogen. As a result of which the endometrial layer gets too thick. The typical history that we get to hear from such women is that they get periods irregularly and whenever they get periods the bleeding is heavy and is also prolonged. Sometimes we also hear women complaining of heavy bleeding for about 15 or 20 days every time they menstruate. This is very much striking of this condition which is called thickened endometrium or even something which we term in medical language as endometrial hyperplasia. Endometrial Hyperplasia is a dreadful thing because in some women who continue to have this thickened endometrium for a prolonged period of time in life without any treatment can sometimes end up in a condition called complex endometrial hyperplasia which is a forerunner for endometrial cancer and that's the reason why any woman who's got heavy prolonged periods should not take it for granted and should seek the help of a gynecologist as early as possible. #heavybleeding #menstruation #periods #womenshealth #womenhealth #endometriosis #endometrium |
