At the Crossing Apartments in Lakewood, Washington, a knock is heard on the door of an apartment complex belonging to 22-year-old Rebecka Neubauer. Outside is her boyfriend, 26-year-old Ezra Fleming-Ralston. Ezra knew it wasn’t appropriate for him to show up. Rebecka’s mother had forbidden him from coming to the apartment because of the Covid pandemic. But Ezra was in a bad situation. He said his grandparents in Vaughn had just kicked him out of their home after an argument and he had nowhere else to go. So, Rebecka begged her mother to allow him to stay. The matriarch eventually relented. Later that night, another knock hits the Neubauer door.
