Initially a quest for gunpowder held in the fortress symbolizing royal authority, the event quickly turned into a significant uprising. Despite housing only seven prisoners, the Bastille stood as the epitome of the king’s absolute power and oppression. The attacking group, comprising fewer than 1000 individuals, including local craftsmen and wine merchants, was initially engaged in prolonged negotiations. However, when these stalled, violence erupted, leading to the fortress's surrender and the tragic death of 98 attackers and one defender.
