Mario Molina was a Mexican-American chemist who was instrumental in discovering the harmful effects of CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) on the Earth's ozone layer. In the 1970s, Molina conducted groundbreaking research that showed how CFCs released from aerosol cans and other sources could break down ozone molecules in the Earth's atmosphere, leading to a hole in the ozone layer. Molina's research helped to raise awareness of the dangers of CFCs and paved the way for the adoption of the Montreal Protocol, an international agreement that banned the production and use of CFCs worldwide. For his work, Molina was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995, becoming the first Mexican-born scientist to receive the award. Molina was also a passionate advocate for the environment and worked to promote sustainable development in Mexico and around the world. He founded the Mario Molina Center for Strategic Studies on Energy and the Environment in Mexico City, which works to promote sustainable development and combat climate change. Molina served on numerous scientific advisory panels and was a respected voice on issues related to the environment and climate change. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. Molina passed away in 2020 at 77, leaving behind a legacy of scientific discovery and environmental advocacy.
