The man who assassinated Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi This is his story By the late 1940s, Mahatma Gandhi was an icon, both in his native India and across the globe. His peaceful ideals and leadership, gained him thousands of followers. But some beliefs also gained him, enemies. Godse was the most ardent opponent of all. Godse was born on May 19, 1910, He was raised in an orthodox family in India. Godse was the fifth child and the fourth son. But his three brothers died in infancy. In the school days, Godse followed Gandhi as his idol for non-cooperation with the British. But at the age of 19, Godse met Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. and followed his philosophy. Savarkar was the President of the Hindu Mahasabha Godse later became a devout member there. In the Indian Independence Movement, there was a birth of a political and ideological boundary. One of those was the All India Muslim League, which wanted a separate Muslim-majority state. On the other hand, there was Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), that didn’t want cooperation with Muslims. As Hindus and Muslims clashed, Jinnah, who was the most vocal about the idea of Pakistan, Believed that India cannot be a welcoming nation to Muslims, and wanted a Partition. As the nation went towards big turmoil, Gandhi Ji finally consented to the situation. At first, he opposed the two-nation theory, But at this time partition seemed inevitable. Gandhi stated that the decision, was the result of all Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs’ approval. Godse however blamed Gandhi for the division. The first attempt to assassinate Gandhi, occurred on 20th Jan 1948. But the plot was unsuccessful. Later on Jan 30, 1948, Godse made a second attempt. Gandhi Ji was returning from a meeting. A man pushed his way through the crowd and blocked Gandhi's path. It was Nathuram Godse, who had no words but a gun, pointed at the father of the nation. He shot Gandhi with three bullets to the chest. Gandhi only said one phrase before he died, “Hei Ra…ma! Hei Ra…ma. Godse surrendered and asked for the police to arrest him. He revealed that he was unhappy, as Gandhi supported the Muslim community. "No doubt, my own future would be ruined, but the nation would be saved," he said. Godse was hanged on November 15, 1949.
