At the beginning of 20th century, The united states wanted to build a canal to shorten the journey between the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean with 11,000 km on the current territory of Panama, but at that time, Panama was still part of the Republic of Columbia. Because the Colombian government didnβt allowed the U.S. to build the canal on itβs territory, The united states decided to help Panama get itβs independence from Colombia which finally happened in 1903. Starting with 1904, Panama gave the U.S. control over a 10 mile wide strip of land to allow them to build the canal. This piece of land was basically U.S. territory. The U.S. owned the Panama Canal Zone and the canal itself until 1999 when they agree to transfer both the canal and the canal zone to Panama.
