| Video Discription | After an uptick in violence in the city of New Haven, including a number of gang-related attempted murders and murders, an inter-agency investigation was begun by the ATF, the FBI, the DEA, and the New Haven Police Department, working closely with the United States Attorney’s Office and the New Haven State’s Attorney’s Office. This investigation has targeted the most violent individuals in the ongoing gang war between members of the Exit eight street gang and other gangs in New Haven. The proposed defendants are members and associates of the New Haven street gang known as Exit eight. The Exit eight gang is named after the geographic area accessed by exiting Interstate ninety one at Exit eight in New Haven. This area includes several small housing projects off the Route eighty corridor, which are located on two major thoroughfares, Eastern Street and Quinnipiac Avenue. In recent years, the Exit eight territory has been plagued by shootings, murders, shots-fired incidents, and violent crimes. Members of Exit eight have longstanding issues with other neighborhood gangs within the city, specifically gang members from within the hill (the southwestern most neighborhood of New Haven) and gang members from the area of New Haven known as, the Gee. This is an area based around a former housing complex in the Fairhaven section of New Haven and the Farnam Courts housing complex. Violence between these groups is retaliatory in nature and the rivalry appears to be behind many of the recent shootings and homicides in New Haven. Members of the Exit eight gang identify themselves by the numbers 8 and 88, and they often utilize the symbol of an eight ball. These symbols are found in social media posts, on clothing, and on group members’ tattoos, and they are used to show allegiance to the gang. More recently, younger members of Exit eight are identifying themselves with the word Honcho. This derives from the nickname of Dashown Honcho Meyers, an Exit eight member, who was murdered on February 23, 2020 on Quinnipiac Avenue, the territory of Exit eight. honcho has been glorified posthumously by the group. |
