"Let us not revel in our victory. Let us greet this victory as a welcome opportunity to effect the changes that may better the lives of our brothers and sisters throughout the country. Let us understand the sentiment behind this mandate. Let us each acknowledge that the people of India have chosen us to represent their aspirations, not ours. The people of India have spoken. They have once again reaffirmed what we all believed all along, what we all believed in our hearts. They have asserted that the soul of our nation is secular, is all-inclusive, is one. They have decisively rejected the ideology of the likes of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh = National Volunteer Corps), the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council) and the other organisations."

13. SOUNDBITE: (English) Sonia Gandhi, Congress party President
"The commitment to provide a strong and stable government dedicated to promoting social harmony and peace unites all of us in this coalition. The commitment to provide a firm resolute government devoted to the welfare of the kisans (farmers), of the khet mazdoors (farm labourers), of youth, of women, of the weaker sections of society, unites all of us all in the coalition. The commitment to provide a purposeful, effective government focussed on accelerating employment, growth and investment unites all of us in this coalition. We are all aware that we have an enormous task ahead of us. The way ahead is fraught with difficulties, the challenges are vast. Let us therefore not be complacent. Our party organisation has to be infused with new energy and drive."

STORYLINE :
Lawmakers from Sonia Gandhi's Congress party unanimously elected the foreign-born Christian as their leader in Parliament on Saturday, taking her a step closer to becoming prime minister of the mainly Hindu nation.
Congress, which scored a convincing general election victory this past week, is now firmly on course to form a coalition government and take power within days.
"We are all aware that we have an enormous task ahead of us," Gandhi told the lawmakers at the Parliament building in New Delhi.
"The way ahead is fraught with difficulties. Let us therefore not be complacent."
Gandhi, 57, has scheduled meetings over the weekend with her allies, mostly leftist parties, to garner enough support in Parliament to become prime minister - following in the footsteps of her husband, Rajiv, and her mother-in-law, Indira, both of whom were assassinated.
Gandhi said she felt "deeply humbled" standing before the new Congress lawmakers in the hall were her predecessors once stood, including India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
"I would like to remember them today. I would like to honour them today," she said, wearing a traditional cream-coloured sari.
